I got into Jujutsu Kaisen through the Shibuya Incident arc in the anime. Personally, I feel that the structure and storytelling approach of the manga change quite a bit between the first and second halves. Since I prefer the latter half—specifically, the tone and style after the Shibuya Incident—it was only natural that I got hooked from that section onward.
With that in mind, I’d like to review the series with spoilers, including the key points where I felt the biggest shifts between the first and second halves.
Before the Shibuya Incident (First Half)
To be honest, I didn’t read the first half at all when it was initially serialized because I wasn’t subscribing to Weekly Shonen Jump at the time. Even though I was aware of the buzz surrounding it, I wasn’t particularly drawn to the protagonist, Yuji Itadori (sorry! Though now, I absolutely love him), so I didn’t pick it up.
During the Kyoto Goodwill Event arc, I remember thinking, “This is a pretty typical shonen manga development,” so it didn’t really grab my interest. That said, there was definitely something about Aoi Todo’s character that made me feel like I had to keep an eye on him. And as it turns out, that instinct was spot on—he went on to deliver some seriously hype battles all the way up to the final showdown with Sukuna.
After the Shibuya Incident (Second Half)
This is purely a matter of personal preference, but I absolutely love stories set in real-life cities and towns. And with Jujutsu Kaisen taking place in Shibuya—a place I’m deeply familiar with—I couldn’t help but be excited. However, that same Shibuya ends up being utterly devastated in the inhuman battle between Sukuna and Mahoraga, the Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General. The sheer scale of this battle was nothing short of phenomenal.
Following the Shibuya Incident came the Culling Game arc. I struggled quite a bit to fully grasp each character’s abilities, but the concept of powerful warriors from history being resurrected in the modern era and engaging in supernatural battles to settle past grudges and achieve their goals was absolutely breathtaking.
Then came the ultimate showdown: the revived Satoru Gojo vs. Sukuna—the strongest sorcerer of the modern era versus the most powerful being in history. Their clash was so intense it felt like a literal natural disaster. However, in a shocking turn of events, Gojo was defeated and killed.
From there, the remaining Jujutsu High members launched an all-out battle against Sukuna, delivering a relentless, adrenaline-pumping fight. After an incredibly hard-fought struggle, they managed to defeat Sukuna, bringing the story to its climax and conclusion.
What Happens in the Final Chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen?
The final chapter depicts the aftermath of the final battle, showing what happens to the surviving characters. Personally, I was surprised by Sukuna’s appearance. It felt, in a way, that Sukuna was just lonely, especially in the final scene where he exchanges fists with Yuji Itadori. It gave me the impression that, at his core, Sukuna was seeking connection.
On a personal note, I found it heartwarming to see Sukuna and Uraume walking side by side.
However, it’s sad that some of the characters I really wanted to see survive ended up dying…
What is the Latest Volume of Jujutsu Kaisen?
The latest volumes, 29 and 30, were released on December 25, 2024. I found out when I looked it up again, but they were actually released simultaneously. (No wonder the release from volume 28 felt quick!)
Summary
The first time I encountered Jujutsu Kaisen was during the Shibuya Incident, specifically the best bout between Yuji Itadori and Mahito that took place in the restroom at Shibuya Station. The animation quality of that fight was absolutely incredible, and I thought, “This might be a series I should read the original manga of!” Trusting that feeling, I ended up buying all the volumes, and I’m happy to say that my intuition was spot on. It turned out to be a fantastic, satisfying long-running manga.
It’s so good, so if you’re curious, definitely give it a read. Jujutsu Kaisen is awesome!
