【Hunter × Hunter】Let’s analyze and wait for the manga’s serialization to resume! Explaining foreshadowing with spoilers!
As a premise, the mysteries and foreshadowing listed in this article are limited to those that remain unresolved at the time of writing. Please be aware of this in advance.
Now, let’s dive into the spoilers!
Dark Continent-Related
First, let’s take a look at the foreshadowing related to the Dark Continent, which is currently unfolding in the ongoing serialization at the time of writing.
The number of the cabin where Chrollo was: “37564”
There are various interpretations of this mysterious number circulating among fans.
“Massacre” Foreshadowing
The number 37564 can be read as “minagoroshi” , meaning “massacre” in Japanese. This has led to speculation that it foreshadows the complete annihilation of the Phantom Troupe.
Reversed Timeline
Some fans have pointed out differences in Chrollo’s clothing between chapters 366 and 367, suggesting that by the time of chapter 366, all other Troupe members may have already been dead.
Phantom Troupe Mystery
The Phantom Troupe has had a strong fan following since its introduction. Let’s dive into the mysteries and foreshadowing surrounding them.
Since the early chapters, there have been many intriguing and cryptic depictions, leaving many readers curious about their true significance.
The Theory that Chrollo vs. Hisoka Was Actually a Collaboration
The theory suggests that the battle between Chrollo and Hisoka at the Heaven’s Arena was actually a collaboration, with Chrollo teaming up with the Phantom Troupe members. For Hisoka, this battle was a long-awaited one, and it ended with Chrollo’s victory. Afterward, Hisoka, who had died, used the Nen power that strengthened after his death to resurrect himself and begin hunting the Phantom Troupe.
The battle between Chrollo and Hisoka, known for its massive amount of text, involved a highly complex strategy from Chrollo, which I personally couldn’t fully comprehend on my first read and had to revisit multiple times (and I’m still not sure I understand it all…). In the midst of these complex battle scenes, the theory of collaboration emerged, suggesting that members of the Phantom Troupe, such as Korutopi and Shalnark, may have secretly assisted Chrollo.
One of the key points supporting this theory is Chrollo’s ability to instantly create hundreds of copies of puppets in a short amount of time.
It’s certainly not unreasonable, considering that Korutopi and Shalnark were present at the Heaven’s Arena, and the rumors about this theory seem to make sense in this context.
The reason why Kalluto joined the Phantom Troupe.
Kalluto Zoldyck, the youngest member of the assassin family, the Zoldyck family, joined the Phantom Troupe, but the reason and motivation behind his decision remain a mystery. After witnessing the battle between the Ant and Feitan, he becomes despairing of the difference in their strength. He expresses his feelings by saying, “I joined to bring back my brother,” but the identity of this “brother” is also shrouded in mystery.
Personally, based on the events surrounding this, I speculate that Kalluto joined the Troupe to gain the power needed to forcibly bring back Killua, who has become attached to Gon, back to the Zoldyck family.
The theory that the Phantom Troupe will all die.
In an interview published in the special 0-volume distributed in theaters, Yoshihiro Togashi stated that all members of the Phantom Troupe would die. While this could be interpreted as a general statement about the inevitability of death for all living things, the fact that the author has explicitly stated this means the possibility of the Phantom Troupe’s complete annihilation cannot be ignored.
The most likely cause of their demise is the theory of extermination by Hisoka. In fact, Hisoka boarded the Black Whale with the explicit goal of eliminating all members of the Phantom Troupe. If Hisoka were to accomplish this goal, it would effectively mean the complete eradication of the Phantom Troupe.
Who called Shalnark?
The identity of the caller who contacted Shalnark just before his confrontation and death remains unknown. The attack by Hisoka occurred at an unexpected time, leaving these mysteries unresolved.
Personally, I think it’s highly likely that the call came from Machi, after she untied Hisoka’s bungee gum, based on the timing. But what do you think?
Is Sheila the same person as Pariston?
There are indeed many facts, such as their similar facial features and other common traits, that make it difficult to dismiss the theory that Sheila and Pariston are the same person. Personally, I hope they are at least somehow related (such as being family members).
Chimera Ant-related
There are many intriguing episodes and depictions related to the Chimera Ants, which I’m sure have left many readers curious.
Will Gyro make a reappearance?
The Chimera Ants landed in the NGL, an organization founded by the mysterious figure Gyro. Gyro had a difficult childhood, enduring harsh treatment from his father and being forced into hard labor.
After realizing, due to certain circumstances (which were quite disturbing), that his father never loved him, Gyro killed his father at the age of 12. At just 21 years old, he founded the environmental protection organization NGL. At the same time, he established the Neo Green Life Autonomous Nation, advocating for environmental protection in public while secretly spreading chaos in the world by distributing the drug “D2” to sow hatred and destruction.
Though Gyro was eaten by the Queen Ant when the Chimera Ants landed in NGL, he was resurrected as a Chimera Ant soldier with a clear ego and memory, possibly due to his extraordinary ego.
Although Gyro isn’t directly related to the main story, his character has been deeply explored and depicted, leading to theories that he may reappear at some point.
Personally, I can’t help but believe that the detailed backstory given to him has some meaning or purpose, and I look forward to the day he may reappear as an embodiment of evil.
Zoldyck Family Related
The Relationship Between Nanika and Zigg Zoldyck
It is highly likely that Nanika (Ai) originates from something that Zigg Zoldyck brought back from the Dark Continent. Zigg is known to have once explored the Dark Continent alongside Chairman Netero, and it is speculated that during this expedition, Zigg discovered Nanika (or the entity that became Nanika) and brought it back.
The basis for this speculation includes the following points:
- Nanika’s abilities are similar to one of the Five Great Calamities.
- The Zoldyck family has kept Nanika hidden.
- Killua has special command over Nanika.
If Zigg brought Nanika back, it would have been several decades ago, well before the birth of the currently 11-year-old Alluka. This suggests that Nanika (Ai) may have been attached to a member of the Zoldyck family for generations.
If the above is true, it implies a deep connection between the Zoldyck family, the Dark Continent, and the Five Great Calamities. Therefore, there is a high possibility that these mysteries could be revealed in the future Dark Continent arc.。
The reason Killua recognizes Alluka as his sister.
A discussion on the reasons why Killua recognizes Alluka as his sister. Here are a few possible reasons.
Alluka’s gender identity and self-expression.
The reason Killua treats Alluka as his sister could lie in Alluka’s gender identity and self-expression. Throughout the story, Alluka exhibits feminine behaviors and speech, referring to herself as “atashi” (a female pronoun in Japanese). This strongly suggests that Alluka identifies herself as a female.
Perhaps Killua is the only one in the family who understands and respects Alluka’s internal changes and self-recognition. While other family members refer to Alluka as a “brother,” Killua may be the only one who honors Alluka’s wishes, treating her as a “sister.”
The influence of Nanika.
The existence of “Nanika” residing within Alluka may also play a significant role in this situation. In fact, Nanika is a separate personality with feminine traits, and her presence could be influencing Alluka’s gender identity and self-expression. Killua may accept Alluka as his “sister” precisely because he deeply understands Nanika’s existence and the impact it has on Alluka.
Character-specific foreshadowing and mysteries.
The relationship between Gon and the Dark Continent.
The theory that Gon is from the Dark Continent is supported by the following reasons:
- Mystery of his birth
- The uniqueness of the Freecss family
- Extraordinary latent abilities
The mystery of his birth.
At the time of writing this article, there is very little information about Gon’s mother, and his birth remains shrouded in mystery. In the story, after the scene where Jin attempts to speak about her in a cassette recording, there has been no further mention of his mother’s existence.
The Uniqueness of the Freecss Family
The Freecss family, including Gon’s father Jin, has been hinted to have connections to the Dark Continent. Given the ongoing possibility that Don Freecss is still writing The Dark Continent Expedition Journal, it is highly likely that more facts related to the Freecss family’s lineage will be revealed in the future.
Extraordinary Latent Abilities
At just 12 years old, Gon forced his own growth and demonstrated enough power to overwhelm Neferpitou, one of the royal guards of the Chimera Ant King. This extraordinary latent ability suggests that Gon may not have the typical physical constitution of an ordinary human. It raises the possibility that there is something unique about him, potentially linked to factors beyond the ordinary human limits.
Is Gin really Gon’s father?
There’s a theory suggesting that Gin is not actually Gon’s real father. When Gon first hears a voice message from Gin, the scene shows what appears to be Gin riding on the back of a gigantic dragon in a mysterious place resembling the Dark Continent (and with a double dragon at that!). The figure that seems to be Gin in this scene might not actually be him, but someone else from his family, leading to rumors.
Now that it’s mentioned, it does seem like Gon doesn’t resemble Gin much—maybe the only similarity is their hair texture?
Personally, I find the idea that Gin and Gon are siblings more plausible, so I’m really excited to see if the relationship between the two will be revealed in future developments.
Kite’s reincarnation ability.
In the Chimera Ant arc, Kite was defeated by Neferpitou and reincarnated as an ant. His ability is deeply connected to his nen ability, “Crazy Slot.”
Jin’s statement to Gon, “In that guy’s ‘Crazy Slot’, there’s a number that won’t come out unless you seriously think, ‘There’s no way I’m dying!'” suggests that Kite’s ability has a special “reincarnation” function.
The conditions for reincarnation
The conditions that may have allowed Kite to reincarnate are as follows:
- Strong will to survive: As Jin said, the moment Kite truly thought, “I absolutely will not die,” a special number may have appeared.
- The hidden ability of Crazy Slot: Kite’s nen ability may have had an unknown reincarnation function. It is possible that within the numbers that have not been revealed (which Kite himself wasn’t aware of), there was a special ability that made reincarnation possible.
The mechanism of reincarnation
The mechanism of Kite’s reincarnation can be speculated as follows:
- Automatic activation of nen ability: At the moment of Kite’s death, the special ability of Crazy Slot may have automatically activated, initiating the reincarnation process.
- Fusion with Chimera Ant traits: A theory suggests that Kite’s strong will to survive, combined with the genetic traits of the Chimera Ants, allowed him to be reincarnated as a new being while retaining memories of his past life.
The curse brought by the Sonata of Darkness
The “Sonata of Darkness” that cursed Senritsu. The sheet music, said to have been composed by the Demon King, curses those who listen to it and causes those who play it to die.
The Sonata of Darkness was first mentioned when Senritsu taught Kurapika about her ability, but after that, its name hasn’t appeared again in the main story. Who is the Demon King? Is the curse some form of nen ability?
I speculate that the Demon King may originate from the Dark Continent. The reason being that in the world of Hunter x Hunter, there haven’t been any alternate dimensions like the afterlife, hell, or demon worlds. The Dark Continent, on the other hand, is a place where almost anything could exist, so it wouldn’t be surprising if a nen user or being referred to as the “Demon King” were to exist there.
Summary
How was that?
When it comes to Hunter x Hunter, one of the key attractions of the series is undoubtedly the numerous mysteries and foreshadowing that have yet to be revealed. Let’s continue to look forward to the unraveling of these captivating mysteries in the future!
